In Japan, New Years is the major holiday. That said, I still gravitate to Christmas colors when I craft pieces during the holidays or for the winter season. While this piece features chrysanthemums and plum blossoms, traditional flowers for December kanzashi, I feel like the red and green really have that holiday spirit feel.
Most of the pieces I’ve made for the winter season have been pretty traditional all things considered – but I’m hoping to work on some more modern and western inspired pieces soon.

I wasn’t originally planning to make this piece; I came up with it as a way to use up some of the fabric leftover after I completed my certification courses.
I’m really happy with how it turned out, and of course I am always thrilled when I make use of leftover fabrics or parts that I’ve had in my stash for a long time – like the bell at the end of the sagari dangling from this piece.

Like many of the pieces I’ve been working on this year, this piece was made possible by a production grant from Creative Saskatchewan – who were kind enough to support the production of over 500 new works of tsumami craft made by me. I can’t express enough how grateful I am for their support. If you’ve ever wanted to support an arts organization, I can’t recommend Creative Saskatchewan enough.
Anyhoo, that is all I’ve got for today. I hope to see you guys again next week with more crafty creative projects.
