It’s that time again – time for the monthly sketch dump. I’ve been getting a little better about doing sketches regularly since the new year started – at least two every week. It’s not a lot, but it’s better than last year at least! I’ve even been finding myself wanting to do the sketches in the middle of the week as opposed to having to force myself to do them at the end of the week.
Even if I’m tired or feeling lazy I will make myself do a sketch at the end of the week if I haven’t done any so far, because I know I need the practice and that once I start drawing I’ll feel better about it. But, it’s nice when I don’t feel like I’m doing a chore, when instead I feel like I’m doing something out of love and enjoyment. I don’t know if I’ll ever work my way up to daily sketches, but I like to think that it’s like exercise – a matter of conditioning. Once you get used to running three miles, you then move up to give and so on. If I keep at it, I’ll probably get there and not even realize it.
Anyhoo, This month I have an interesting choice of sketches for you – first is a rather creepy crypt keeper looking fellow. I really enjoyed this particular Daily Drawing Challenge prompt. Drawing beautiful, perfect people is great but not nearly as interesting as drawing somebody creepy or different.
Next, we have a very intensely staring rooster. In Hawaii, there are wild chickens and roosters all around my godfather’s house. I had never known that roosters crow all day, pretty much whenever they feel like it, until I spent the night there and heard the roosters crowing in the evening. I always thought they only crowed in the morning. The more you know!
And lastly, we have a portrait of a gentleman with a white beard and toque.
Since I don’t draw every prompt, I have the chance to pick and choose which prompts I want to draw each week. I like drawing faeries and cute girls and women in general, so I already get a lot of practice drawing that type of subject matter, so I try to pick prompts that are outside the realm of what I usually draw.
I really enjoy the rooster sketch, but I think senor creepy fellow is my favorite from this month. Which one do you like best?
