Back at the end of may I made my return to the convention and art scene by attending Anime North and showing new pieces at the Gallery Momiji.
This probably sounds like business as usual to anyone who’s been following my work, but for me this was an especially momentous occasion because it was the first event I’ve attended since completing my treatment for cervical cancer.
I don’t want to dwell on it too much, since I spent the last six months thinking about pretty much nothing else, but I can tell you now from experience that cancer does, indeed, suck.
While the last six months have been hard, I’m happy to report that I am – as far as we can tell – cancer free. I’ve been making a slow return to work, art and what we can refer to as “normal” life.
I count myself lucky to have the support I have, and to know that the grant organizations that have put such faith in me as an artist and the work I produce are willing, always, to work around any challenges that arise. I want to give an extra special thank you to Creative Saskatchewan, who approved a grant that helped me travel to Anime North to present my work, and who I will also be working with in future to create collections of work for upcoming events.
Anime North was a great event to return to, as the Gallery Momiji allowed me to have a less hands-on approach to presenting my work; I didn’t need to sit behind a table for hours, and was able to meet with other artists and friends while there.
Hopefully in the next few months I’ll have more new pieces to share with everyone, as I will be getting back into the swing of things.
