We’re continuing the month of October with, you guessed it, more chrysanthemums. This brooch makes use of a piece I originally crafted a few years ago. It was supposed to be mounted on a small u-pin, but it actually snapped off of the u-pin. I got irritated by this, and tucked the piece away into a stash of parts, and forgot about it – as one does.

I’d actually wanted to use this piece for my Sailor Moon kanzashi project, but the color of the silk was slightly too orange. I ended up doing another dye lot that was more red, and worked with that for the Sailor Moon set instead. While I was going through my random stash of parts, I rediscovered this chrysanthemum. I wanted to give the piece a little more detail, so I crafted a new piece of foliage to go with it before adding the glittery white felt backing and locking brooch back.

I was originally going to add a bead cap and rhinestone centerpiece to this, but I’ve been in a bit of a traditional mood, so I made a gold uzumaki (or swirl) as the centerpiece instead.

I know that I’ve made a lot of chrysanthemum pieces this month – and there will probably be more coming – but I do hope I’ll get to work on some different motifs soon. What kind of motifs would you like to see in the future?

I was thinking I’ll work on more maple leafs and maybe some gingko pieces. But, honestly, I have a bit of a mental block around maple leafs – I always feel just a little intimidated when I’m making them and have a habit of putting off the creation of pieces that involve maple leafs or gingko. I’ve talked before about having been intimidated by making sagari, and managed to overcome that particular fear – so I have no doubt that with effort I can overcome by apprehension toward maple leafs and gingko. I just need to put some effort toward it!

This piece, like many of the pieces I’ve been working on this year, was made possible by a production grant from Creative Saskatchewan – who were kind enough to support the production of over 500 new works of tsumami craft made by me. I can’t express enough how grateful I am for their support. If you’ve ever wanted to support an arts organization, I can’t recommend Creative Saskatchewan enough.

Anyhoo, that is all I’ve got for today. I hope to see you guys again next week with more crafty creative projects.
